Today was Lucas' follow up appointment with Dr. Rauchwarg regarding his jaundice. Everything has improved, no more yellow coloring, AND he gained more than a whole pound since last week; he is now 9 lbs 4 oz. John will be proud. When the nurse weighed him, he had to be completely naked, so of course I opened his diaper and he peed and shot out some poop.
I have had some concerns because I hear breastmilk is supposed to be so easy to digest, and yet it seems every time Lucas' poops, it looks painful and he cries and pushes really hard and turns red and then it explodes. The doctor said it may be what I am eating, but the thing is, even healthy foods cause gas and discomfort, so what should I eat? I am willing to go on a restricted diet for a period of time to see if he gets better--i feel so horrible for him when he is trying to poop.
He slept so much today, I know what I am in for again tonight; and my legs are already cramping all day today from lack of sleep. But at least he slept through our dinner; Susan and Norman and I took him to Red Lobster for a quick dinner and he slept through it all. Now he's up, finished 3 oz PLUS he nursed for a few minutes, and he is still whiny-- I think because of stomach discomfort. I am going to look up what I should be eating. Another day down, 5 more to go.

You look great!
Have you looking into mylicon drops at all? They are safe (according to my ped) and I used them with Gavin and they were a lifesaver. What they do are break down the bubbles in his tummy so that the gas is much easier to pass. Once we started using it with Gavin, it really helped him out and he lost a lot of his fussiness overnight becasue he wasn't having stomach pains from gas. You can get the mylicon drops at Walmart or Target or Walgreens, anywhere like that. It's with the baby stuff. Good luck, I hope you get some good sleep tonight!
I can't believe how handsome Lucas is!! Good job, you guys! Sorry I haven't commented before...been having difficulties getting onto the computer until recently. Georgie has some of the same problems. I am a vegetarian and so beans are a huge part of my diet. They don't (ahem) give ME any issues, but I cut them out because it seemed like they were giving Georgie some problems. I slowly introduced them back in and there aren't any more problems. I would try taking out or limiting dairy. It didn't seem to bother Georgie, but it's really hard on certain babies. Also, NO BROCCOLI! Poor Georgie! One day I had a broccoli in two meals plus bean burritos. I don't think I'll ever forget that. Take heart! Seems like the older they get, the easier that part is!
lindsay- thanks so much! I will be buying the mylicon today so we will see if it works!
katie- thanks! i am sure as a vegan your baby has lots of gas! Are you still breastfeeding?
Have you tried the Ventaire bottles yet? I know they don't match your breastpump hook-up but still try them if you haven't.
You guys look so sweet. I like the lighting in that part of the house.
We had the ventaire bottle too. I think they helped with gas...I guess that is what it was. Alex wasn't a very gassy baby.
Never used gas drops but I've heard they're great. Sounds like you are adjusting to everything well. About the lack of sleep I don't think you'll ever get caught up. At least that's how I feel.
sarah- well, we have the ventaire bottles that you suggested, but he is eating so much that I am out of my reserve and may have to supplement with formula soon--which is when i will try those bottles.
brianne- yup, i guess i should get used to it for another 18 years or so!
That makes sense. In that case I recommend Enfamil Gentlease. That has really worked for Max and even generic brands make it now (much less expensive). They call it "for babies with fussiness and gas."
