I read and watched this story a while ago, but recently read this article about the court case and what could happen to these evil men.

Back in 2007, Steven Hayes age 47, and Joshua Komisarjevsky broke into a family's Connecticut home, where they beat Dr. William Petit and tied him up in the basement, and they tied his two young daughters to their beds, and sent their mom Jennifer Petit to the bank to withdraw money from her account for them. They entered the house at 2 a.m....so they had to wait for the bank to open, in order for a withdrawal...For 8 hours they drank and tortured the family.. raping the 11 yr old.
This is the video of the bank she entered fearing for her family's safety...she tried to tell the tellers that she and her family were being held hostage and needed money and help...the teller gave her the money, while the manager in the back called the police...it seems like no one was willing to believe her and they all took their time...
by the time Mrs. Petit returned to the house, Joshua had raped 11 yr old Michaela and placed pillows over both girls' heads, still tied to their beds. Komisarjevsky then said they had to rape the mom to get even with him. After sexually assaulting her, they strangled Mrs. Petit, and doused the girls and house with gasoline and burnt the house down with them in it.
Mr Petit managed to escape from the basement as the house exploded, and went to the neighbors to call the cops. Since the phone call from the bank manager, the cops took over 40 minutes to send someone out to check the house. They were told not to go to the house until it was proven safe...meanwhile the girls are being raped and were about to be burnt to death.
Even more disturbing is that their attorney's defense was to blame the police for not showing up early enough to prevent them from the atrocious acts! Yes, the local police proved to be useless and didn't alert the fire dept, or state police--but it was protocol because they "had no reason to believe anyone was in danger"??? The same attorney was able to successfully spare another killer's life a few years before, because the judge sympathized with the murderer's upbringing and drug addiction...he plans to use the same defense that Hayes and Komisarjevsky were both ex-con drug addicts.
I just can't comprehend why we should go easier on someone who is addicted to a drug. Is the crime any less heinous because they were under the influence? Would the crime be worse if they had an excellent upbringing and had never gone to jail? It's the same backward logic that supports labeling crimes as "hate crimes" if the victim is associated with any minority group. Murder is murder- regardless of the motive. First of all, you can't always assume the motive of a killer simply based on the victim's/perpetrator's race, religion, or sexuality. Secondly, is it less of a crime when a man kills a woman in a jealous rage, or a woman kills her kid in a "temporarily insane" moment, or a man shoots and kills a store owner during a robbery? Are those cases considered "love crimes?" or "i-like-you-crimes?"
I am sure Connecticut is trying to do away with the death penalty, but the real problem is that prison isn't hard enough. These guys commit crime after crime, do less than the measly amount of time they are sentenced according to their "good behavior," and have no problem committing more and more crimes. There is no threat in going to prison; it's a resort. I have no sympathy for these men, regardless of their backgrounds or addictions. But the state of Connecticut seems to have more respect for them than their victims; Hayes has now been put on "suicide watch." WTF?!

This makes me cry :(
i know..it is so disturbing and scary. it bothered me all night! I tried to read another elvis book to distract myself...
I had to come back and tell you that last night, I couldn't sleep. I kept listening for sounds outside. I had to pray a couple of times to ask God to help me sleep and protect our home. Talk about monsters in the dark for adulthood :( I hope you get the classes you want set up.
aww i'm sorry--you don't need anything else preventing you from getting adequate sleep! It's a lot more worrisome being a mom huh? I will pray for your family's safety too. :)
