Fourth of July in Plymouth, MA

For the fourth of July, we decided to take a trip down to Plymouth--Jenny wanted to show us some magical boulder they had there. Yeah, I'm kidding. But Bill did have to brace us before we were overwhelmed with the amazing Plymouth Rock. The story behind Plymouth Rock is somewhat confusing. It was never mentioned by the Pilgrims who came here in 1620, and they actually first came to Provincetown (off Cape Cod). The story about this rock being the first that pilgrims ever stepped foot on, started about 100 years later. Still, it has been preserved and since 1774, when half of it was left in the wharf, the other taken to the town's meeting-house.
This was the structure that housed the rock in 1867:

And this is the structure we saw on the fourth, which has been there since 1920:

Here we are checking out the 1620 rock:

And here's the Mayflower II an accurate replica built in 1956:

It was full of people because just as we arrived, there was a parade for the 4th of July. What an appropriate place to celebrate Independence Day!
Here's the parade--the sirens were all blaring on these trucks--we had to cover the babies' ears for a while. But it was fun for all and Lucas liked the cool cars. I have to admit, all the patriotism really made me emotional! I had been starting to feel like everyone in this country hated everything the U.S. has always stood for, so to see such a display of love for country, in Ted Kennedy's liberal home state no less, was very comforting.

Fourth of July continues in next blog...we took lots of pictures huh?

Yeah you did take lots of pictures, but they are so much fun to look at! Thank you for taking the time to post them. Isn't it fun to be out and about? I love it. Especially when the weather allows.
